Master Gohei Mochi Making
Furusato Taikenkan Kiso-Fukushima : ふるさと体験館きそふくしま
Make Kiso’s Specialty Mochi-rice Sweats.
Kiso River Valley
Description
Gohei was out logging his forest one day (hopefully not the treasured 'hinoki' Japanese cypress trees -- one tree would cost you one neck!). Tired of cold rice and cold miso for lunch, he pressed the rice on a stick, smothered it with miso and cooked it over a fire. Voila -- the Kiso Valley's favorite sweet snack, Gohei Mochi was born! At the Furusato Taikenkan activities center in Kiso Fukushima, you can learn how to replicate Gohei's feat at a Gohei Mochi cooking class.
Recommendation
Southern Nagano's Kiso Valley and Ina areas along with neighboring Aichi and Gifu Prefectures share a tradition for making a delicious snack called Gohei Mochi. The name is a bit misleading, as gohei mochi is made from regular white rice, not the mochi sticky rice. The rice is pressed into a sticky cake, stuck on a skewer, coated in a sweet sauce, covered with crushed nuts, and aromatically cooked over a flame.
